New Years Resolution #1 - Going Cold Turkey - Fail

This year I set my self a few personal goals, New Years resolutions if you will. One of them was to see how long I could go without drink (alcohol) whilst seeing how it affected me.

    Becks
After lasting until Feb 18th I finally caved in and broke it. So how was the journey and what did I learn?

    Health

One of the reasons I wanted to stop was due to my health, I was suffering from high blood pressure (might still be), also as I'm reaching my late 20s I feel I am struggling to cope with the aftermath, it takes longer to get over the hangover the morning after. So how have I been feeling getting up and do I generally feel better not drinking? The short answer is no, the long one; maybe it's more complicated than that. Frankly I don't care.

I've woken many mornings / evenings after having 8-10 hours of good sleep only to find myself with hangover like symptoms, even though I haven't been drinking, and frankly that's just not something I'm willing to carry on experiencing , especially not having the pleasure of a few nice cold ones the night before. You see hangovers are part and parcel of my routine, I'll drink loads to enjoy myself and expect a hangover the morning after, that's just keeping with the balance of things. I accept that. Everyting has a reaction, hangovers are a consequence of my drinking and enjoying the night before. I'm happy with that. It's one of my philosophies in life; do what you want to; as long as you accept the consequnces of your actions.

    Now What?

This wasn't an accident, I consciously decided to break this resolution. So I did have a backup plan; I've decided to do something beneficial to me, which kind of was the point of the no drinking thing anyway. I've deided to start reading books, real books, you know those things with ink on paper? I've realised it's been almost 15 years since I had read one. That does sound worrying. A sign of the times? Perhaps, but slightly worrying nonetheless. So the new rule is; try to finish one book a week and put up a review on here. Lets see how this goes.

Feel free to leave some of your recommendations in the comments below; I'll be sure to check them out.

Well, if you like zombie stories, Feed from Mira Grant is great. It's set in 2020-something , 10 years after a zombie outbreak, and basically shows how normal life would change if you've got zombies to deal with. For instance, being a doctor is one of the most dangerous jobs in the world, cause every time a patience dies there's a chance, he/she will turn. Or that animals can turn too, so noone keeps any pets anymore. The main characters are a group of bloggers. (I've actually got a contest on MissGeeky right now for it... sorry, for the plug, but I love this book so much, I'm giving one away)

If you're into scifi, try Old Man's War or Agent to the Stars from John Scalzi. They're both funny and really easy to read. The first is set in the future, where people from Earth can enlist to the army and go into space, but only once they've turned 75... The second is a Hollywood agent that gets a new client: an alien race with a marketing problem: they're basically huge smelly jelly blobs and aren't really sure how they're supposed to come out to the humans.

I can suggest more sci-fi and fantasy stuff, but not really sure what you're looking for. The above 3 are great though, even if you normally don't tend to read those genres.
