Blogger, Sports fan, gamer, party animal and generally sociable guy. I sometimes tell it like it is. Deal with it.
But a few days ago I picked it up and started reading it; within in 2 sessions, it was finished. Here's why:
It's a science fiction hacker story, which combines hacking, technology, our current reliance on technology and the obvious dangers it poses to us. Similarities between this book and The Matrix have been quoted as part of the promotion;
'Daemon is to novels what The Matrix was to movies' --Rick Klau,
and it's a spot on quote.
The build up of story, characters and good description of scenes are very good, they're not quite Stephen King in detail but do a good job keeping imagination ticking over. More than anything I was impressed with the accuracy of the exploits detailed in this book which, as obvious as they may seem, are usually overlooked by most writing in this category. Writing a book about hackers, should include some detailed info into how hacks take place and Suarez does this well. This isn't just about hacking and our reliance on technology however, there are more thoughts being provoked here; how society copes, adapts and moves with technology, how reliance on technology will bring the world together, with nations playing smaller parts in our lives, races and ethnicity being less a factor. Technology doesn't differentiate between any of those and in this book's future, we may not either.
Issues on big brother controlling us, surveying us, manipulating us are all in some part explored here, but the most important message I found is; how frighteningly "plugged in" we already are.
Freedom is the sequel to Daemon, which I shall be reading next.
